Full stop. Incessant. Climate disaster and racism and patriarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s raining. Heavily. Late May, in California.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to see the difference through the rain. And anger. And tears.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can do this.<br>We can do this.<br>We have to. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until today, I really tried to not believe that white Republican men hate women and girls. I did. I really tried empathy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in Alabama today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2019\/may\/14\/alabama-abortion-ban-white-men-republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"twenty-five white men (opens in a new tab)\">twenty-five white men<\/a> plus a white woman governor decided that a teenage girl raped and made pregnant by her own father would have to stay pregnant. And birth that baby. A rapist\u2019s baby. And that\u2019s just one example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cWe can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist.\u201d<\/em> \u2014James Baldwin<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I know now. They\u2019re all in. We are just meat to them. We don\u2019t matter. We are just matter. We are \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"host bodies (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/progressivesecularhumanist\/2019\/03\/florida-house-speaker-jose-oliva-calls-pregnant-women-host-bodies\/\" target=\"_blank\">host bodies<\/a>.\u201d They hate us. Women and girls.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;Women will die in those states as a result of these new laws, and women will go to jail. That\u2019s the point, and that is increasingly apparent as the point.&#8221;<\/em> &#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2019\/05\/alabama-abortion-bill-supreme-court-john-roberts-roe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Dahlia Lithwick,\u00a0in\u00a0Slate (opens in a new tab)\">Dahlia Lithwick,\u00a0in\u00a0Slate<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a world that I understand.&nbsp;<br>This is not a world that I need to understand.<br>This is a world that I need to refuse. Full stop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there is another world I need to nurture. Relentlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Aidan Forth\u2019s incredible book (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Barbed-Wire-Imperialism-Britains-1876-1903-Berkeley\/dp\/0520293975\" target=\"_blank\">Aidan Forth\u2019s incredible book<\/a>\u2014his relentless, detailed, incredible book about imperial Britain&#8217;s &#8220;carceral archipelago&#8221;\u2014there is a small part that shook me more than all the others. British administrators and wartime leaders in South Africa, he said, positioned civilian concentration camps as the humane alternative to just mowing the rebellious Boers down. The liberal alternative to extermination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> I read this and I heard <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Trump at a Florida rally last week (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=trump+panama+city+shoot&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\">Trump at a Florida rally last week:<\/a> \u201cDon\u2019t forget,\u201d he said, talking about Border Patrol. \u201cWe don\u2019t let them and we can\u2019t let them use weapons\u2026.Other countries do. We can\u2019t. I would never do that. But how do you stop these people?\u201d And someone yelled \u201cShoot them!\u201d And he laughed. \u201cOnly in the Panhandle can you get away with that statement,\u201d he said. And they laughed, the white people behind him. They laughed and laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camps as the humane alternative to shooting brown people down. Because they won\u2019t stay in their place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prisons as the humane alternative to shooting black people down. Because they won\u2019t stay in their place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Won\u2019t work for shit wages. Won\u2019t bow down to the badge. Won\u2019t put up with life as it as been handed to them. Want something more, a life with dignity, equity. Something better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a world we need to refuse.&nbsp;<br>And there is another world we need to nurture.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And white men who think they know how to build this world need to stop, and look around and listen. Because women and people of color\u2014and <em>especially<\/em> women of color\u2014have been sustaining this world, nurturing this world, building this world, for ages now. So listen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/15\/opinion\/abortion-alabama-law.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"resources (opens in a new tab)\">resources<\/a>. There are stories. There are <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"actually existing networks (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2016\/03\/14\/where-is-black-lives-matter-headed\" target=\"_blank\">actually existing networks<\/a> of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"alternative power (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/12837878-the-empowerment-manual\" target=\"_blank\">alternative power<\/a> we can learn from, and draw on, now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It starts with listening.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And breathing. Refusal and nurture like catch and release, like the upswing and downswing of breathing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And fighting like hell.&nbsp;<br>Finding stillness but never silence.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the rain. And disaster. And anger.
